The Power of Moms… and How to Stop the Cycle of Disordered Eating and Eating Disorders

In many cases, disordered eating behaviors are carried through generationally. While research shows there may be some biological factors at play, parents can also make adjustments to make sure the chances of passing on an ED are at a minimum. This Mothers’ Day, we’re going to talk about how moms can help put a stop to disordered eating and eating disorders.

Children are very perceptive. They adopt the habits and language of their parents. It’s best to get an early start on food neutrality. Here are some adjustments you can make to stop the cycle:

Mindfulness. Encourage intuitive eating by telling your children to listen to their bodies. Hunger cues are normal and good; it means the body is functioning properly, and it’s time to eat! Conversely, if your child is full, don’t force them to eat more.

Avoid restriction. No food is “good” or “bad.” Avoid attributing any particular label to a food or snack. The language parents use about food can set a confusing precedent. Everything can be enjoyed in moderation.

Positive self-talk. Your child listens to and absorbs the way you speak about your own body. Then, they can internalize that language and apply it to themselves. A good rule of thumb is: If you wouldn’t want someone to say it to your child, don’t say it to yourself.

Body neutrality. Be conscious of the comments you make to your child. Terms like “baby weight” are harmful. They ingrain the thin ideal and set a strange standard for bodies that are still developing and growing. In general, avoid looks-based comments. Reward your child for their smarts, kindness, or hard work. Looks are temporary–character isn’t!

Using these tips are a great start to a healthy home. For more information and personalized advice, reach out to a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. Remember: Mothers are amazing, and they have the power to put a stop to disordered eating before it begins!
